Forum Discussion: The Changing Role of the Teacher
Technology is changing the role of the teacher in the classroom. Although these effects are more profound for some than others, advances in technology have the potential to change the way teachers interact with each other, their students and parents, and the community as a whole. Sadly, perhaps, the teacher is no longer the sole expert in the classroom but rather the facilitator of a greater wealth of knowledge.
The impact technology has on a classroom can vary. Its uses can differ by grade level and it cannot replace the instruction of behavior, manners, and study skills. Nevertheless, the amount of resources available to teachers is increasing exponentially and how each teacher uses those resources can have a great impact on a childs education. Text, video, and audio formats are now utilized in a plethora of interactive sites, web blogs, pod casts, wikis, and such.
Teachers can communicate with a global network of their peers to find ideas or check facts. Teachers can use the Internet as a conduit to find lesson plans, read professional articles, participate in blogs, or view videos from classrooms around the world. Advances in technology have made it easier for people to communicate.
Communication with parents has also made advances. With online grading programs, such as MyGradeBook.com, a teacher can post grades for parents to view on the Internet with links for email. Blog pages can let parents and the world community know what events are happening in the classroom and at the school. Musical programs or technology projects can be shared online through video postings. Technology is not only changing the role of the teacher in the classroom, it is changing the role of education in the community.
