The National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers, or NETS*S, provide guidance for teachers and a system to measure
the effectiveness of applying technology in the classroom.
The world is firmly placed in a technological renaissance. The Internet and digital camera are just some of the additional
instructional tools a teacher can add to his chalk and text. Student essays no longer need to be typed with an ink ribbon.
Written work can be formatted and edited on a word processing application and presented not only to the teacher but to the
world in an attractive webpage. Modern technology not only adds to the teachers' selection of instructional tools, but also
adds exciting new choices of methodology for learning. Rather than stubbornly clinging to the practices of the previous century,
a new system of education should embrace technology and change.
To avoid using technology for the sake of technology, teachers need to follow a purpose for using technology in their
classrooms. NETS*S ensures that instruction and learning with technology is done with flexibility, depth, and most importantly
reason.
This site will attempt to present the NETS*S framework. Each of the six standards areas will discussed and example artifacts
will demonstrate their use.
